Sunday 4th May 2008

Ascension of the Lord

“Know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time”. This promise that Jesus gave his disciples, as he was leaving them at the Ascension, is a wonderful truth for us today. It is a promise that is fulfilled in so many ways. He is with us every time we are together because he said that where two or three of us are gathered together we make him present. This has great implications for our homes and families. The love of husband and wife makes Christ present. The love of parents and children makes Christ present. And every gathering we are part of in our parish makes Christ present. That is the meaning of being a parish – a community of people who make Christ present for the world around them so that he can be Saviour for that world. We are powerfully reminded of this real presence of Christ through the Blessed Sacrament present in our community. This week we renew our faith in this mystery.

World Communications Day

‘The theme of World Communications Day back in 2002 was entitled ‘The Media: At the Crossroads between Self-Promotion ans Service. Searching for the Truth in order to Share it with Others’ - sheds light on the important role of the media in the life of individuals and society. Truly, there is no area of human experience, especially given the vast phenomenon of globalisation, in which the media have not become an integral part of interpersonal relations and of social, economic, political and religious developement. The social communications media, in particular, because of their educational potential, have a special responsibility for promoting respect for the family, making clear its expectations and rights, and presenting all its beauty.

Let us ask the Holy Spirit to raise up courageous communicators and authentic witnesses to the truth, faithful to Christ’s mandate and enthusiastic for the message of the faith.

Communicators who will ‘interpret modern cultural needs, committing themselves to approaching the communication age not as a time of alienation and confusion, but as a valuable time for the quest for the truth and for developing communion between persons and peoples’ (Pope John Paul 2 Address to the Conference for those working in Communications and Culture, given on the 9th November 2002)
