Reflection

The Gospel for this weekend puts before us the example of Zacchaeus, the wealthy tax collector, whose encounter with Jesus transforms his life. Climbing up a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passes, Zacchaeus finds himself being singled out by Jesus: ‘Zacchaeus, hurry down, because I must stay at your house’. In this moment the tax collector experiences the joy of a new life in Christ. But it is a joy not shared by everyone. Some bystanders grumble that Jesus is willing to stay ‘at a sinner’s house’. His retort to them is a direct challenge to the limitations we so often place on God’s universal love and his desire that all may be saved – ‘The Son of Man,’ he tells them, ‘has come to seek out and save what was lost.’

PRAYER FOCUS - May we live the faith we profess
Question: What does this prayer mean to you?
Conversion
Today’s first reading (Wisdom 11:22-12.2) sets the scene for the Gospel story of the conversion of Zacchaeus by telling us that God enables people to repent by overlooking their sins.
The story of the conversion of Zacchaeus, the hated tax collector, shows the power of God’s grace, and lets us see how compassionate and forgiving Jesus is.
Though we sin by not showing love Jesus never stops loving us. There is always ‘a welcome on the mat’ of God’s house. No one is ever turned away. Isn’t it a pity that we don’t always act like Jesus in the way we relate to others. How do you think people would change if we always behaved like Jesus?
What does this phrase mean: ‘The Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost’?
