Reflection

The Gospel for this weekend puts before us a sobering lesson. Speaking to his disciples Jesus lets them know that they will experience persecution, imprisonment, betrayal, the hatred of many and some will be put to death. This will be on account of him and his name. But despite the opposition they will face, Jesus reassures them that ‘not a hair on your head will be lost’. He invites them and indeed us all to see that there is always the loving care of God for us in each and every situation of our lives. Our Father’s care and concern for us reaches into the most difficult and darkest situations that we are undergoing. We are never alone or indeed left alone by God. In the face of all that life throws at us, God goes before us smoothing our path and directing our steps in the way of His peace.

The Triumph of God
Jesus said to His disciples: "When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened". Every now and again someone comes up with the scare about the end of the world. And there are always people to believe them. But that is not our way as followers of Christ. Our task is to transform the world through the power of love. There are many situations in our world that we cannot directly affect except through prayer and through exercising our power of voting in favour of peace and the rights of people. But there are situations in the world that we do affect directly and it is there particularly that we live out our faith in Christ. The intimate relationships of marriage and family life need to be as good as we can make them and that is within our control. And the faith community to which we belong is a place in which we can make a difference by getting involved in the needs of the world around us.
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.
